Chemical-industry processes—including chemical synthesis and the production of plastics, pharmaceuticals and other chemical products—generate emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other pollutants. These emissions must be removed efficiently to meet air-protection legislation and ensure safe operation. In terms of exhaust-air volume, the applications are usually small to medium-sized.
Regenerative Thermal Oxidation (RTO)
Suitable for removing a broad range of VOCs from exhaust gases with low to medium concentrations. The exhaust air passes through a ceramic heat-storage bed into the oxidation chamber, where the VOCs are oxidized at high temperatures. Process heat is used to preheat the incoming air, increasing energy efficiency.
Application example: Treatment of exhaust gases from organic synthesis processes in which various VOCs are generated as by-products.
Regenerative Catalytic Oxidation (RCO)
Ideal for operations with a defined pollutant composition and low VOC concentrations. The catalyst enables oxidation at lower temperatures, saving energy and reducing the formation of undesirable by-products.
Application example: Removal of VOC emissions from pharmaceutical production, where gentle and efficient exhaust-gas treatment is required.
Activated Carbon Adsorber
Suitable for small and medium air volumes with low VOC concentrations. Activated carbon efficiently adsorbs VOCs and is periodically regenerated, providing continuous operation at low cost.
Application example: Treatment of exhaust air from chemical drying and mixing processes that release low VOC concentrations.
Direct-Fired Thermal Oxidation (DFTO)
Designed for small air volumes with high VOC concentrations, including potentially explosive mixtures. The exhaust gas is fed directly into the oxidation chamber, where harmful substances are converted into harmless products.
Application example: Destruction of exhaust gases from distillation or rectification processes containing high concentrations of organic vapours.
